No Publication...For Now

I am sad to announce that there has not been enough interest for me to move forward with creating the publication. I would like to share the work that has been sent with my on the Facebook page and here on the blog for 1810: The Art Digest    Hopefully in the future there will be enough interest to actually create the publication.
I think I would like to post submissions weekly, so that means anyone can send in a submission at any time. All submissions must STILL follow the guidelines that were laid out (link to guidelines above) and it is possible that not every work sent in will be shared.

I hope to continue to gain support for this project so that in the future there might be enough work to actually create the digest. I look forward to seeing all your art!

Funding

I have closed out the Go Fund Me campaign to raise money for this project. After having it open for over a month and nearly 2500 people viewed the fundraiser I got not even a single dollar donated. I am currently accepting submissions to attempt to create a basic magazine to help get the word out there about this. With any luck, I will continue to receive art submissions and will be able to present even a small version of the magazine to start with.

I have some art submissions currently, I still need lots more. Especially need written submissions as I have none of those yet. Be sure you go to the Submit Art page (link above) and read through the guidelines to find out how to submit your work. And be sure to tell your artist friends to submit as well!

Art Submissions

We are still accepting submissions for the magazine. Please follow the link above to read through the guidelines on submitting. All types of visual art are accepted. I am looking into ways to add music as well, but I haven't worked out those kinks just yet. Be sure to let all your artist friends know to get their submissions in by March 15th!

Accepting Art Submissions

1810: The Art Digest, Art Submissions, Color TheoryI had hoped to raise funds that would allow me to not only work on this project full time, but would cover some of the start-up costs of getting things going. Since I have not been able to raise anything, I decided to try to create a mini publication, if you will. In doing so, I hope to show people and artists what the finished product will be like and thus attract more artists and subscribers. This means building the project up from absolutely nothing. The first few publications (provided the first one is successful) will be less fine tuned than I originally had hoped. However, I am determined to make this work and assist artists around the world in showing off their work! Please read through the guidelines for submitting art (the link is in the title bar above) and be sure to tell all of your artistic friends to stop by as well. I look forward to seeing all the interesting work!

1810: The Art Digest

1810: The Art Digest, Color Theory meets Magazine

THE IDEA:

"Color is an essential part of how we experience the world, both biologically and culturally. One of the earliest formal explorations of color theory came from an unlikely source — the German poet, artist, and politician Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who in 1810 published Theory of Colours, his treatise on the nature, function, and psychology of colors."
Source: http://www.brainpickings.org/index.php/2012/08/17/goethe-theory-of-colours/
In 2012, I created a self-portrait series based on color. It was incredibly low budget , using mainly items, make-up, props, and wardrobe I already owned. The result was interesting and I learned a lot about my artistic photography style. I determined I was not done with color as an inspiration and proceeded to create another series, only this time using other models. Once again, the shoot was low budget, and while the result was good, I still feel the project 'A Color Study' to be incomplete.
The idea to create a publication inspired by all forms of art and color came to me as I considered a way to get the best results possible. The idea for this publication, then, is to showcase the newest set of concept photography for my color study, while also introducing other artists and writers. The main focus will be color, and the secondary focus will be to get many artists, all over the world, published and discovered. I will be looking to accept submissions for 'Color Theory' based art and poetry then include the chosen art in one of 4 issues of this publication.

THE PLAN:

Step 1- Create a compelling and informative project on gofundme.com (you would be reading this now)
Step 2- Collect funds from the campaign.
Step 3- Begin to search for models, artists, writers, and other requirements. Purchase required equipment for the conceptual shoots.
Step 4- Sort through submissions/applications and begin selection process of models and artists. Price costume/wardrobe, hair and make-up artists, props, and other required expenses for concept shoots to fit shoot and selected model.
Step 5- Purchase items needed for shoots (as needed), create sets, then complete shoots and editing.
Step 6- Final selection of submitted art and choose cover art and showcased artist for publication.
Step 7- Layout publication on HP MagCloud and complete final editing of publication.
Step 8- Release final draft of publication for sale to the public!
Step 9- repeat steps 3-8 for remaining three publications
I will be using resources from hired people, newspapers, social media, and online classifieds, as well as my own abilities to create these 4 publications.

THE FUNDS:

*NOTE: Due to lack of interest in funding, I will be working on making a test publication so people can get a better idea of what this is. The funding campaign will still be running for those who want to help.*

I know $70,000 seems like a large amount for 4 published digests. Let me break down the budget for you, but please keep in mind these are estimated amounts.
$5,000-$7,000 in fund processing fees
$4,000 - initial equipment investment for concept shoots
$6,000 - 40-50 or so models (one model, occasionally two, per shoot)
$6,000 - 40-50 or so hair and make up artists (will vary on what is needed)
$25,000 - 40-50 or so costumes/wardrobes, props, sets, licenses, etc per shoot
$23,000 - travel, food, lodging, gas, etc for one year (also includes any unforseen costs of shoots or production.)

The initial equipment amount will include website, branding, lights, back up camera and other equipment, as well as a large storage, high RAM computer most likely with software to use for editing and storing images and doing publication layouts.
$1500 for top of the line computer to allow storage as well as best post processing capabilities. Toshiba Qosimo
$1000 for lights for use indoor and outdoor Alien Bee B800 (x2), Vagabond Portable Power, extra flashtubes, lithium pack and other minor accessories.
$350-$500 website domain and set-up
$700 Backup camera and lenses Canon T3i & lenses & Canon 50mm Prime Lens
$280 Adobe Acrobat (required for creating the magazine layout)
(*These amounts are general estimates and some prices may change.)
There is $6,000 allotted for both models and hair/make-up artists because I want the best for this project and people need to get paid for working. I am currently looking to keep shoot costs at $500 or less per shoot. This includes costumes, props, location and shooting licenses and any other fee associated with the creating the set. Also, some shoots will cost more than $500 so anything not spent on other shoots will be used for that.
*Estimate budget for one shoot:
$100 Model payment
$100 Hair/Makeup Artist
$122 (plus tax/shipping) Dress
$48 (plus tax/shipping) Scarf accessory
$49.50 (plus tax/shipping) Mask accessory
There may be permit fees depending on the location this get shot, other props such as lights, columns, or whatever comes to mind when I sit down and fully plan it out. If the shoot lasts a while, I will also provide lunch for model and Hair/Makeup artist.
(*these numbers are estimates and may change if items are no longer available or something better is discovered.)
For the course of one year I will be driving all over doing shoots, possibly staying in hotels, having to eat away from home etc. This is why there is an allotment for those fees. I am also planning on spending a lot of time on this project so part of this is for personal use in leiu of a paycheck.

THE PRODUCT:

Using HP MagCloud, 1810:The Art Digest will produce four publications, one in April 2014, July 2014, October, 2014, and January 2015. These publications will include my conceptual color study images that inspired this project as well as other art and writings submitted from other artists.
The publications will be available for purchase in digital as well as print to anyone interested. The finished product is meant to be a gallery of sorts. People who go through will find many types of art with information on finding particular artists they may fall in love with.
{Example pictures coming soon!!}

THE END?:

This funding proposal is for 4 publications of 1810: The Art Digest. I am looking forward to creating these publications, and it is my hope that people immensely enjoy them. If there is continued support and interest I hope to continue to create the publications over time.
